How do you plan?
Understanding by Design has largely become the "go-to" planning methodology for teachers across the country. After 10 years of experience in the classroom it has become clear that, despite having a shared format and mindset, the ways in which teachers plan varies drastically both within and across subject areas (which isn't necessarily a bad thing!). During this conversation, we will be tackling some tougher questions that aren't talked about enough:
- How long are you actually spending on planning? How long should you spend?
- What should new teachers focus on when first designing inquiry driven units?
- How detailed should daily lessons be?
- Who are we actually planning for? Us? Administrators? Students? How do we plan to meet the needs of all of our stakeholders?
Discuss all of these questions and more!
Conversational Practice
We will begin by discussing and agreeing upon some shared vocabulary. After this, we will have some facilitated discussion within small groups. The point of these conversations are not to come to a conclusion, rather to make you assess and think critically about your own planning practice.
